Spring 2010 Anime Preview thoughts

So  I’ve been working on collecting info on the up coming season starting about four weeks ago… then forgot about it after gathering information on two shows.  Once again I’m blaming Clear Sky for sucking away a good chunk of time. That game is addictive, and also burning through four+ Gundam shows for the past two months didn’t help.  Anyways might as well get this out the door before Sunday.

So an explanation for the whole A, B, C, and L ranking system I use.  A rank are titles that I fell will have a large following and in general will be poplar with most American fans of anime*.  B rank doesn’t have as much market penetration as A ranked shows but are still pretty good.  C rank has very little appeal to most American fans of anime but that’s not too say it won’t have it’s followings or necessarily that it’s really bad.  L rank stands for Left field or “it came out of left field” or more simply I have no idea if it will be any good because the information I have for it is unquantifiable for me.  Is the rank I give it accurate, heck no.  For most part I’m basing the rank on a piece of promotional art or two, what little I can easily find for story synopsis, and what other stuff I perceive that makes something good or bad, like what animation company is handling animation or who’s doing the music or something else.  As with just about anything like this, this is simply opinion and please feel free to ignore what I have to say.  Also I’m lazy and don’t fell like writing any descriptions until I’ve seen it so if you want to know what it’s about click on the links provided.  I have preference for ANN so that’s what you get first.

Angel Beats! [MAL]

(B: +PA Works,  Key adaption, girls with guns.  – Key adaption)

  • Adapted from the visual novel by Key (Clanned, Kanon, Air)
  • Animation by PA Works

I’m not really a fan of the adapted properties of Key games or interested in the source material themselves but this could be a good show, or at least decent.  The fact that it’s animated by PA Works which did CANAAN and has guns (okay that’s more a bonus for me personally) helps get me on board even if it’s from the people who “make the weepy moe girl games” which tend to be popular-ish.  It does have some of Key’s writing staff working on the script so hopefully no one complains about how it diverges from source material… who am I kidding, fans would complain no matter what.

Arakawa Under the Bridge [MAL]

(A: +SHAFT/Shinbo, weird story  – weird story, SHAFT/Shinbo)

  • Adapted from the manga by Hikaru Nakamura (Saint Young Men),
  • Animation by SHAFT

Looks like this is going to be SHAFT’s only show this season.  The manga-ka’s other series is Saint Young Men which is about Jesus and Buddha who have returned to the living and now are rooming together in a apartment in Tokyo.  Ya, that’s just win unless you’re an uptight Christian or other denomination of.  Although the two lead characters in Arakawa aren’t quiet as epic as Jesus or Buddha the rest of the cast does pick up the slack with a kappa, a man with a star shaped mask, a gun toting man dressed like a nun, and others.  Now my question is what direction will SHAFT and Akiyuki Shinbo going to take this project.  Also, even though I’m not too big on voice actors, Maaya Sakamoto will be voicing the lead female character here.

B Gata H Kei [MAL]

(L-B/C: +comedy/slice of life, -ecchi.  The L part is because I’m not too sure about the direction of the story)

  • Adapted from manga by Yoko Sanri
  • Animation production Hal Film Maker

Oookayyy.  Not too sure how to feel about this one.  The art from what I’ve seen isn’t really my kind of thing and nether is the premise of the story but this could be interesting but I kind of doubt it.  All in all it doesn’t look like absolute trash but it could be an okay show but it’s most certainly not A+ material.  At least it looks better then Chu-bra!!.

Giant Killing [MAL]

(L: It’s sports/soccer)

  • Adaption from the manga by Masaya Tsunamoto (story) and Tsujitomo (art)
  • Animation production Studio DEEN (Higurashi/Umineko no naku koro ni)

I’m not too big on sports shows in general and the only anime sports series that really won me over was Bamboo Blade.  But judging from the art I’ve seen of the characters, they have a bit of uniqueness to them (even if they are the tall lanky shonen junk variety).  Animation is being handled by Studio DEEN which doesn’t put out exceptional work for the most part, but it’s never un-watchable for me at least.  And last the opening theme song is performed by the band THE CHERRY COKES, which is an awesome name even if they do suck themselves.  Okay, just watched their video for the song “Bullet for Vepid Beer” and I’m impressed, an Irish folk/ lighter end punk (looking at Flogging Molle which they are compared too it’s called Celtic Punk) / Japanese band with a singer whose voice sounds like he smoke too much, and I’m impressed (crap more music to find).  Even if the show sucks, at least the OP will be good, or at least unique compared to the average Japanese pop music that tends to be used.

Hakuouki (Hakuōki Shinsengumi Kitan) [MAL]

(L: Historical fiction, -bishonen)

  • Adaption of romance adventure game from Idea Factory for PS2 (2008)
  • Animation production Studio DEEN
  • During Meiji Revolution/Restoration

Hmmm. Not too sure about this one.  Mainly, I’m not the target audience, but it is set around the time of the Meiji Revolution/Restoration.  Animation is being handled by Studio DEEN as well.

Heroman [MAL]

(L: +BONES.  –Stan Lee.  The L rank comes from Stan Lee’s participation)

  • Adapted from manga by Stan Lee (original creator), and Toman Ota (Art )
  • Animation production Studio BONES (Fullmetal Alchemist, Darker than Black, Eureka Seven)
  • Directed by Hitoshi Nanba (Animation director Sukeban Deka OAV – 1991)

This is a true out in left field kind of show.  On one hand you have Stan Lee, who creates interesting characters but kind of sucks at storytelling and can come up with some stupid things (like Striperalla), on the other hand we have Studio BONES who have a knack for creating some of the most silly story concepts and making them actually work like Eureka Seven.  From the preview commercial that was posted online it at least looks good but we’ll have to wait and see if it turns out to be good story wise.  I’m going to guess (and I hope) it starts out simple and becomes more complex.

Ichiban Ushiro no Daimao [MAL]

(B-C: -shonen junk, oops harem show)

  • Based on light novel by Shotaro Mizuki
  • Animation production by Artland

At first judging from the art of the main character and not paying close enough attention to the synapse I had guess it was a shonen adventure show but in fact it looks to be a harem show.  Whether it’s a good one or not is yet to be seen but it’s at least slightly unique in some respects, (all right it’s not really that unique) the lead male character’s future occupation as Demon lord king or whatever the title is.

Iron Man [MAL]

(L: -Japanese interpretation of American property and the fanboys tend to hate that)

  • Adaption of the Iron Man franchise, original concept by writer/editor Stan Lee, writer Larry Lieber, and artist Don Heck and Jack Kirby
  • Animation production by Mad House

Ya have no clue what’s going on here other then Marvel asked Madhouse to do a few things for them.  Also I haven’t seen anything regarding the story the show will follow and the art I’m using is the only one I’ve seen, but the movie was pretty fun so here’s hoping that they do a good job.

UPDATE: Ya… didn’t happen this season.

K-ON!! [MAL]

(B: +Cute, music, moe.  -Moe, focus is comedy mostly)

  • Based on manga by kakifly (now licensed by Yen Press)
  • Animation production by Kyoto Animation
  • Second season

The first season was a pretty enjoyable show, if moe-riffic.  Going to watch by default.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama [MAL]

(B-C: +Shoujo, manga out in US.  -Shoujo)

  • Adapted from manga by Hiro Fujiwara, published in the US by TOKYOPOP under the title Maid Sama
  • Animation production J.C. Staff

I wanted to pick up the manga at some point because it didn’t sound exactly like the a-typical shoujo trash that tends to populate the bookshelves, but never got around to it.  Anyways it’s probably a decent show with J.C. Staff handling the animation.

Kiss x Sis (TV) [MAL] – MAL link not exactly safe for work

(C: +Moe.  –Moe, ecchi, incest by marriage)

  • Based on manga by Bow Ditama (Mahromatic –Art, Fight Ippatsu! Juden-chan)
  • Animation production Feel
  • Alternate retelling of OAV from 2008-2009

Hmmm… you know what, speaking from my own experience, sisters aren’t all that great.  Tend to be really bossy.  Never did see the OAV, don’t really care too.

Mayoi Neko Overrun! [MAL]

(B-C: +moe. -moe)

  • Based on light novels by Tomohiro Matsu and Peco
  • Animation production AIC

So far my only thought is moe.  I can’t think of anything else to say about what I’ve read or seen about this show.  But not likely to be super interesting.

RAINBOW (Rainbow – Nisha Rokubō no Shichini) [MAL]

(L: +?.  -?)

  • Based on manga by George Abe (Story) and Masasumi Kakizaki (art)
  • Animation production by Madhouse

Judging from the art it’s about angry young men.  Not sure about it’s story direction but it could be interesting, and it is different than the normal moe shows.

Sarai-ya Goyou (House of Five Leaves) [MAL]

(A-B: +interesting cast of charactes, manga in the US.  -art, I guess slow story-depends on how they pace it)

  • Based on manga Natsume Ono (Ristorante Paradiso), manga published in the US by Viz Media
  • Animation production by Manglobe
  • · Airing in the Noitamina animation block (Nodame, Moyashimon)

Gleeee.  I’ve been following the manga on sigikki.com and this is pretty interesting series so far.  The art is kind of wonky, thanks to Natsume Ono style who did Ristorante Paradiso, but still pretty neat.  This is a must watch for me.  It’s also one of two shows running in the Noitamina block (ya, animation spelled backwards) so the broadcaster has confidence it will appeal to a large audience.

Senkou no Night Raid [MAL]

(L: -pre WWII Japan)

  • Animation production by A-1 Pictures
  • Airing in the Anime no Chikara block (So Ro No Wo To)

Okay… a Japanese military intelligence team working in China before the start of the Pacific War (WWII).  This is kind of touchy subject but I guess we will see.  It’s airing in the Anime no Chikara block on TV Tokyo so more than likely we will see it on crunchyroll.com pretty soon.

Uragiri wa Boku no Namae o Shitteiru (Betrayal Knows My Name) [MAL]

(BL for Boy’s Love, or at least Bishonen)

  • Based on manga by Hotaru Odagiri (Only the Ring Finger Knows)
  • Animation production by J.C. Staff

Ya… not really my kind of thing but since UNM Anime Club keeps getting more and more girls might as well cover it but going to see if any of the female officers would like to give a second opinion.

Working!! [MAL]

(A-B: +Moe.  -Moe)

  • Adapted from 4-koma manga by Karino Takatsu
  • Animation production by A-1 Pictures
  • Episode one pre-broadcast

Eh… same kind of show as K-on.  All the characters are more or less caricatures rather than three dimensional (fictional) people, which doesn’t lend itself to deeper or more complex story telling that I would like.  But it’s a good fluff show anyways with nice animation, colorful art, and also colorful ,if one dimensional, characters.

Yojou-han Shinwa Taikei [MAL]

(A-B: +pop art, collage life.  -pop art)

  • Based on novel by Tomihiko Morimi
  • Animation production by Madhouse
  • OP preformed by Asian Kung-fu Generation
  • Original character Designs by Yusuke Nakamura (art for Asian Kung-fu Generation CDs)
  • Airing in the Noitamina television block

The other show airing in the Noitamina block along with House of Five Leaves.  Original character designs are done by Yusuke Nakamura who does the cover art for Asian Kung-fu Generation’s CDs.  The style is a little towards pop art but not that bad if you ask me.  Plus we get Asian Kung-fu Generation (4th Opening of Fullmetal Alchemist) doing the opening song.  Oh, and Maaya Sakamoto is in it.

Other Shows too mention but will not cover at all

Yutori-chan (B-C: +Moe.  -Moe)

  • Animation production by Actes
  • Distubited via e-mail

Was going to follow it for the guide but have decided to drop sight unseen.  Hmm… after saying that I’ll take a look at episode one just to see.  Eh, interesting but I have problems following short shows.

Ikki Tousen: Xtreme Xecutor

  • Based on manga by Yuji Shiozaki, published in the US by Tokyopop under the title Battle Vixens
  • Animation production by TNK
  • Third Season

More Romance of the Three Kingdoms shenanigans with a mostly all female cast.  Don’t care about this show one bit.  I had my over the top fighting chicks with giant tits anime filled by Tenjou Tenge, which wasn’t really good ether.

Shin Koihime Musou – Otome Tairan

  • Third season of Koihime Musou
  • Animation production by Dogakobo

Another Romance of the Three Kingdoms rip off with this time an ALL female cast replacing the heroes from the time period (there are other men but just background characters really)

D.C. ~Da Capo~ – Ext / D.C.II S.S. ~Da Capo II Second Season~

  • Second Season of the Second TV  series (D.C. II) sequel to D.C. Da Capo which had two seasons so I guess this is season four?
  • Animation production by Feel
  • Based on manga

Forth season of a show I have had no interest in, ever.

Hetailia Axis Powers – Third Season

  • Third season enough said
  • DEEN
  • Based on manga

Good show but could never get into it really after 15 or so episodes.  Doesn’t help that the main source were ripped from webcasts that tend to suck in terms of video quality because Koreans threw a conniption fit about the partial of their country.

Ookiku Furikabatte – Second Season

  • Second season
  • A-1 Pictures

Kind of grew out of baseball.  Plus a continuing season of a show that has already been licensed.  So no.  At least it looks better than MAJOR.

MAJOR – Sixth Season

  • Synergy SP

Ya.  Not going to happen.

Kudos to Anime News Network, MyAnimeList.com, and Chartfags for various things.

* Basing this off of my friends, some members of UNM Anime Club and my own tastes.
